Paul G. Allen Family Foundation Joins Earthshot Prize as a Founding Partner

Seattle, WA — Oct 08 2020

This is the planet’s most critical decade. Many of the choices we make now will be felt by future generations. But we have the knowledge, and the opportunity, to turn the current pessimism surrounding environmental issues into optimism that we can rise to the biggest challenges of our team.

Connecting with other likeminded optimists is what drives much of the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation's grant making and partnerships, and the foundation is proud to join as a Global Alliance Founding Partner in the Earthshot Prize, an initiative developed by The Royal Foundation, co-founded by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The Earthshot Prize harnesses the spirit of President John F. Kennedy's Moonshot, which united millions of people around an organizing goal to put man on the moon and catalyzed the development of new technology in the 1960s. The Earthshot Prize is centered on five "Earthshots" - a simple but ambitious goal for our planet which if achieved by 2030 will improve life for us all, for generations to come.

The foundation shares the goal of the Earthshot Prize to help repair the planet; and our focus on protecting biodiversity, preserving ocean health, and combating climate change is represented in all of the five Earthshots. We believe we all have a responsibility to act, and are working to achieve sustained progress on these pivotal issues over the next decade.

I believe the Earthshot Prize conveys optimism in the face of truly difficult challenges, and that by recognizing and rewarding innovation we can inspire even more progress and develop the next generation of environmental champions. Together we must drive wider understanding and action, recognizing that environmental threats are surmountable only if addressed with urgency and innovation.

— Jody Allen, co-founder and chair of the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation
