Celebrating 20 Years

Seattle, Wash. - The lines at Washington's food banks are growing longer, and donations must be stretched as far as they can go. Of the food available for distribution, protein is particularly important to people in need and especially scarce.

Northwest Harvest, the leader in addressing hunger in Washington State, distributes 18 million pounds of food each year to food banks, meal programs and schools, statewide.

In 2009, the organization received an Economic Relief grant from the Foundation, allowing them to purchase 250,000 pounds of high-protein food, including tuna and stew. This food was distributed across the state and served more than 175,000 people a healthy meal.

Words from clients to Northwest Harvest:

Shelter client: You are our heroes. Thanks for feeding us and thank the people that give you the money to buy the food. You people care so much.

Volunteer: I am volunteering because after losing my job, it's the least I can do for the food you are giving to me and my family. Thank you for feeding us.

Garnette: In 2004, I lost my job due to a serious health problem. I found the wonderful Sky Valley Food Bank in Monroe and was able to have nutritious food. Because of the wonderful volunteers that were very kind to me, I also got back some of my dignity.

Beau: Seventeen years ago, I was a food bank client. While the food bank didn't solve all my problems, it was a very critical piece that sustained me. Now, I am a healthy business owner with a family. Giving to Northwest Harvest is an investment in the lives and futures of real people just like you and me. From one person among thousands, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
